Sludge dewatering flocculant (PAM) selection and dosing: method matters more than brand

Poor dewatering is usually a flocculant grade or dose mismatch, not a machine problem. This article covers the key parameters of cationic PAM, the jar test method, make-up and dosing points, and troubleshooting.

  • 取具有代表性的现场泥样,记录浓度与 pH;
  • 准备若干同型号不同离子度、或同离子度不同分子量的药剂样品;
  • 按相同浓度配制溶液,按梯度投加量分别加入泥样中;
  • 搅拌条件保持一致(先快速混合、后慢速絮凝),静置观察;
  • 比较指标:絮团大小与强度、上清液清澈度、过滤或脱水后的泥饼含水率;

1. Why start with the flocculant

When dewatering performs poorly the machine is usually blamed first, but in practice most problems lie with the flocculant: wrong grade, wrong dose, or unstable make-up concentration. Adjusting the flocculant costs far less than replacing equipment, so commissioning should start with the chemical.

2. Basic classification

  • Cationic PAM: the most common for sludge dewatering, flocculating negatively charged sludge particles by charge neutralisation and bridging.
  • Anionic PAM: used mainly for inorganic sludges or as a coagulant aid.
  • Non-ionic PAM: for acidic or special sludges.

Municipal sewage and most organic sludges are dewatered with cationic grades. Hard-to-dewater sludges sometimes use a dual-chemical scheme combining an inorganic coagulant (polyaluminium chloride, ferric chloride) with PAM.

3. Two key parameters

  • Charge density (cationicity): governs charge neutralisation. Different organic contents and sludge characters need different charge densities.
  • Molecular weight: governs bridging and floc strength. Higher molecular weight gives larger flocs, but too high makes dissolution difficult or flocs too dense for good dewatering.

There is no universal optimum for these two parameters - they can only be set by jar testing on the actual local sludge.

4. How to run jar tests

  • Take a representative sludge sample and record concentration and pH.
  • Prepare several samples: same grade at different charge densities, or same charge density at different molecular weights.
  • Make up solutions at the same concentration and dose them into the samples on a gradient.
  • Keep mixing conditions identical (rapid mix first, then slow flocculation) and let the samples settle.
  • Compare floc size and strength, supernatant clarity, and cake moisture after filtration or dewatering.
  • Among the options that meet the target, choose the one with the lowest dose.

Sludge character changes with season, process and influent, so repeat the test periodically.

5. Make-up and dosing points

  • Make-up concentration: commonly about 0.1% to 0.3% (a rule of thumb - follow the product data sheet and equipment requirements). Too high causes lumps and high pipe resistance; too low means large dosing volumes.
  • Ageing time: solution needs thorough mixing and ageing (commonly about 30 to 60 minutes); un-aged solution flocculates poorly.
  • Avoid shear degradation: do not stir too fast and avoid high-shear transfer pumps.
  • Make up fresh: solution degrades on standing, so prepare daily.
  • Dosing point and mixing intensity: provide rapid mixing at the dosing point followed by gentle flocculation; avoid vigorous agitation that tears flocs apart.
  • Storage: keep powder dry and out of light, and use it soon after opening.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Lumps (fish-eyes): powder added too fast or poorly wetted. Improve the dosing method and mixing.
  • Sticky cake, fouled gaps: overdosing. Reduce the dose and repeat the jar test.
  • Small flocs, turbid filtrate: underdosing or wrong charge density. Increase the dose or change the grade.
  • Sudden deterioration: check whether sludge character changed (concentration, pH, organic fraction), then check the reagent batch and make-up concentration.

Tell us the sludge source, concentration, pH and current flocculant and we will help structure the test programme and the chemical list.
