1. Electromagnetic flow meters
They work on Faraday's law: a conductive liquid cutting magnetic flux generates an induced electromotive force proportional to mean velocity.
- Preconditions: the liquid must have sufficient conductivity and the pipe must run full. They cannot measure gas, steam or oil, nor ultra-pure water with very low conductivity.
- Advantages: no obstruction, no pressure loss, relatively high accuracy (commonly of the order of plus or minus 0.5%, depending on model and calibration), wide turndown, and suitability for solids-laden or corrosive liquids.
- Key selections: liner material (rubber, PTFE, PFA and others, chosen by temperature and corrosiveness), electrode material (316L, Hastelloy, titanium, tantalum, platinum, chosen by corrosiveness), size and velocity range, ingress protection and explosion protection.
2. Ultrasonic flow meters
Two common methods: transit-time, which uses the difference in travel time upstream and downstream and suits relatively clean liquids; and Doppler, which uses the frequency shift of reflections from suspended particles or bubbles and suits solids-laden or aerated liquids, with lower accuracy.
- Advantages: clamp-on types need no pipe cutting, installation and maintenance are easy, there is no contact with the medium, and they suit retrofit projects and large diameters.
- Limitations: accuracy is affected by pipe material, wall thickness, lining, scaling and coupling; straight-run requirements are demanding; excessive bubbles or solids degrade measurement.
3. Comparison
- Medium suitability: electromagnetic needs a conductive liquid; ultrasonic has no conductivity requirement but needs effective sound transmission.
- Accuracy: electromagnetic is generally more stable and accurate; ultrasonic depends more on installation quality.
- Installation: electromagnetic needs the pipe cut; clamp-on ultrasonic can be fitted without a shutdown.
- Cost: electromagnetic offers better value at small to medium sizes; clamp-on ultrasonic often wins on total cost at large diameters.
- Maintenance: electromagnetic needs attention to electrode coating and liner wear; ultrasonic needs checks on couplant and probe position.
4. Installation points
- Full pipe: electromagnetic meters must run full; install on an upward vertical run or at a low point.
- Straight runs: typically not less than 5 pipe diameters upstream and 3 downstream (follow the manual; pump and valve outlets need more).
- Earthing: electromagnetic meters must be reliably earthed to avoid electrochemical and common-mode interference; use earthing rings where required.
- Away from interference: keep signal cable separate from variable-frequency drive and motor power cable; earth the shield at one end only.
- Avoid bubbles: do not install at the highest point of the pipe where gas collects.
- Flow direction: install in the direction indicated by the flow arrow.
5. Information to prepare
Pipe size, medium name and conductivity, temperature and pressure, velocity range, whether the pipe runs full, pipe and lining material, explosion protection requirements, and output signal requirements. The more complete the information, the more accurate the selection.
